One of the most popular summer traditions in Italy: Festa del Redentore in Venice
One of the most popular traditions and celebrations in Venice is la Festa del Redentore, (The Redeemer’s Feast in English): its history dates back to 1577 to celebrate the end of a massive plague outbreak, celebrated with the built of the stunning church of the same name on the Giudecca Island.
Today The Redentore Feast is a deeply felt celebration in Venice as it combines religion with entertainment, thanks to the Saturday night phantasmagorical fireworks’ displayattracting thousands of visitors: a kaleidoscope of shades, from a game of light and colors on the inimitable setting in St. Mark’s Basin, lights up the spires, domes and bell towers of the city. At dusk, plenty of boats traditionally decked out with flower festoons, colorful balloons and brightly Chinese lamps begin to flock into both St. Mark’s Basin and the Giudecca Canal. Awaiting for the firework display, which starts at 11.30 p.m. and lasts late into the night, people enjoy a sumptuous dinner of traditional Venetian specialties.
This year the event will take place over the weekend of July 16-17 2016. Don't miss it if you are in town!!
