Travelling in Italy: important information

The rules for entry into Italy have been updated and simplified!!

The ordinance dated 22 February 2022, unified the regulation of entry from both European Union countries and non-EU countries. These provisions shall remain in force until 31 May 2022. (Ordinance 29 March 2022)

When entering Italy, travellers are required by law to:

  • complete the Passenger Locator Form  before departure and submit it to the controlling personnel:
  • submit one of the COVID-19 green certificates or other certification recognized as equivalent (completion of vaccination series or recovery or swab test)

The equivalent certification is:

  • completion of the primary vaccination series or booster dose according to the vaccination plans of the countries of release with vaccines authorized by the European Medical Agency* (primary series validity 9 months and booster dose without predefined limit)
  • recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection (valid for 180 days from positive swab test)
  • recovery after the administration of the first dose of vaccine or at the end of the primary vaccination series or following the administration of the relevant booster dose
  • rapid antigen or molecular swab test, respectively within 48 or 72 hours before entry into Italy

The vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency:

  • Pfizer-BioNtech Comirnaty
  • Moderna
  • Vaxzevria
  • Janssen (Johnson & Johnson)
  • Nuvaxovid (Novavax)
  • or to vaccines considered equivalent by the Italian legislation (Covishield, Fiocruz, R-Covi).

In Italy, the COVID-19 Green Certificate, or green pass, is the tool that allows people to travel, take public transportation, and access workplaces, schools, universities, healthcare facilities, food service establishments, and hotels. It also allows to take advantage of some services and participate in numerous cultural, recreational and sports activities.

Consult the table of permitted activities without the green pass, with the “basic” green pass and with the “super” green pass and the website dgc.gov.it.

On 12 June, The CDC announced negative COVID tests will not be required to enter the US.  “As of 12:01AM ET on June 12, 2022, CDC will no longer require air passengers traveling from a foreign country to the United States to show a negative COVID-19 viral test or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before they board their flight.“
