Most curious Easter traditions in Europe

Are you visiting Europe this Easter?

Discover with us the most curious easter traditions in Italy & beyond!

  1. See the explosion of the cart in Florence

At 11 a.m., on Easter Sunday morning, the “colombina” (a rocket in the shape of a dove) departs from the Cathedral’s high altar and, gliding along an iron wire, crosses the entire nave to the Cart, where it triggers the ignition of hundreds of multicolored smokes, accompanied by hisses and bangs, and the sparkling pinwheel placed at the top.

2. Join a solemn processions in Spain

Especially in Andalusia. Semana Santa (Easter week) has been celebrated here since the 16th century; today, the city holds a whopping 58 processions throughout the week that involve some 50,000 participants.

3. See rocket warfare in Greece

The rockets are hardwood sticks filled with a gunpowder-based propellant combination. To ring the rival church’s bell is each side’s aim.

4. Paint eggs in Finland

To be honest: not just in Finland!

In many countries, like Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and other Central European countries’ folk traditions, Easter eggs are carved from wood and hand-painted, and making artificial eggs out of porcelain for ladies is common.

5. Taste the traditional sandwiches in England

Call it Hot Cross Buns!
They are inextricably linked to Easter and to Christianity. But in reality, they probably have pre-Christian origins.

6. Try the “egg fight” in Bulgaria

In Bulgaria is a similar tradition of egg cracking. Adults and children alike each take an egg, then go around tapping each other.
